Yucatan Bird Festival Toh 2014

Nov 22, 2014 - Nov 24, 2014

13 years ago, the magic of the turquoise plumage of the Turquoise-browed Motmot (Eumomota superciliosa) inspired the creation of the Yucatan Bird Festival Toh; this bird species is associated with Mayan archaeological sites, and its feathers frame the reflection of the sky on the calm waters of the cenotes (sinkholes) of Yucatan.

From March to November the Festival hosts many activities related to the incredible bird diversity of Yucatan, like birdwatching tours, conferences, workshops, photography and drawing contest, activities for kids and so much more.

The pinnacle of the festival, the bird-a-thon xoc chi ch (in the Maya language literally means (bird count), will take place from Saturday 22th to Sunday 23th of November 2014 in Merida and other amazing places in Yucatan.

Xoc ch’ich’ in the Maya language literally means xoc = count, ch ich = bird or count bird, offers an opportunity for local and foreign birdwatchers to spend an enjoyable weekend full of colors, sounds and nature, plus the chance to get involved in a cultural interchange in which everybody learns something.

The outward objective of the xoc chich s the same as other such events held in other parts of the world in that teams are rewarded for finding the highest number of bird species in a limited time period, traveling around different routes in Yucatan.
