We are located in the Yucatan Peninsula in the heart of the Maya Ruins of Campeche State, Mexico, in the heart of the Rio Bec archaeological area.  We own 50 hectares of jungle fronting on Highway 186- at kilometre 142 between Escarcega and Chetumal, 12 kms west of Xpujil.

Opened in March 2003, we presently have Cabanas and Jungalows with full restaurant and bar facilities with a low rise Hotel planned for the future.
Rio Bec Dreams is in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, an area of 6 million acres. As this is a United Nations designated biosphere, our goal is to be as self-reliant and ecologically responsible as possible.  To this end, we recycle our grey water and are working towards self-sufficiency with solar power.  Rain water supplies over 50% of our water needs at present.

Accomodations

All buildings at Rio Bec Dreams are in keeping with the jungle setting of the Calakmul Biosphere and are made of local materials including thatched roofs.  Our cabanas and jungalows are placed safely within natural vegetation into different sections of our 50 hectares of jungle, with lit garden paths and bridges.  Secure parking is available.

 Cabanas

Each cabana is 6m square and is constructed of block and wood with thatched roofs. The inside includes the bedroom with  4-poster bed completely protected with mosquito netting,  a 3 piece tiled bathroom, a sitting area with a desk and its own screened in porch and private fire pit area.

Jungalows

4m x 5m, our jungalows are simpler, smaller structures built on stilts. Each jungalow has its own porch and either one 4-poster double bed or two or three single beds.

The Jungalows are constructed of wood built on stilts and have their own deck areas. They are 4m x 4m and have a 4 poster bed with mosquito netting as well as plenty of shelving and a tiled washstand vanity, wash basins are hand made Mexican ceramic.

The shared shower and washroom facilities are fully tiled with a wrap around deck.  The fire pit for evening relaxation is centrally located between the Jungalows.

Restaurant and Bar

Our covered palapas restaurant and outdoor patio area overlook  tropical gardens, two desert cactus beds, and Annabel Ridley's marvellous mural of Becan.  Our bar, located beside the mural, gleams with the richness of local hardwoods.

Our restaurant is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Our menu is international in flavour, and includes Italian, French, English, and Mexican items.  We also have daily specials and on request prepare vegetarian dishes.

As Canadians and as travelers ourselves, we recognize that two of the prime concerns of international travelers are pure water and safe food.  Our kitchen, pantry, and auxiliary areas are spacious and very clean, and we use purified water for all our cooking.

We can also provide a variety of packed lunches on request to make your daytime travel more convenient.
Bar

Our bar is open from 10 a.m to 10 p.m.  We stock both international and national brand names.  We also serve sandwiches, salads, fruit plates and of course, hamburgers, hotdogs, and fries.

Our bar is designed to make you want to stay, to enjoy our tropical gardens and desert cactus beds, to listen to the parrots as they fly overhead, to talk about the ruins you have just visited or the jungle you have just explored, to watch the moon come up and share some romantic moments with your partner, to play a game of backgammon, or just to SLOW down for a few hours and not worry about manana.

Rio Bec Dreams is ideally situated for exploring the many sites of the Rio Bec and Chenes regions of Campeche State.  In just 10 minutes, you can be at the archaeological sites of Chicanna, Becan, and Xpujil and no hotel is more conveniently located to Calakmul.

We are happy to recommend local restaurants or supply picnic lunches for your day trips.  For locations farther away, we can suggest itineraries and hotels to make your explorations trouble free.
