SUMMARY REPORT OF THE FOURTH YUCATAN BIRD FESTIVAL – TOH DECEMBER 1 – 4, 2005 The fourth edition of the Yucatan Bird Festival – TOH (Maya for the Turquoise-browed Motmot), brought a tremendous increase in local participation, including private and public sector organizations and institutions that contribute to eco-tourism projects in the state.

ACTIVITY PRIOR TO THE FESTIVAL
Saturday, November 25

6:00 p.m. Inauguration of the photographic exhibit. Location: El Olimpo Cultural Center, lower level of the Municipal Palace of Mérida, Gran Plaza. The exhibit will remain there until Sunday, December 10.
 
ACTIVITIES DURING THE FESTIVAL

Thursday, November 30

10:00 a.m. Inauguration of the Educa Zoo environmental education program “Among wings, legs, bills, feathers…and other birds.” Location: Centenario Zoological Park

5:30 - 6:15 p.m.  Conference (English-Spanish). Location:  El Olimpo Cultural Center.

6:15 - 7:00 p.m.  Presentation on the Birds of Yucatan by Barbara MacKinnon. Location: Video Salon of El Olimpo Cultural Center.

7:00 – 8:30 p.m.  Festival inauguration and awards ceremony of the winners of the photographic contest. Wine of honor and presentation of the musical group Yahal-kab with bird inspired melodies. Location: Main plaza of El Olimpo Cultural Center.  

Friday, December 1

6:00 a.m. Field “practice” trip for bird observation. Open routes.

1:00 p.m. Lunch at the Rey Pakal restaurante, km. 2 Mérida-Motul hwy. Explanation of rules for participating in the Xoc Ch’ich’ competition. (Open to all levels of abilities.)

3:00 p.m. Teams leave for overnight location selected. Examples: Mérida, Uxmal, Santa Elena, Celestún, Kaxil Kiuic etc.

Saturday, December 2

5:00 a.m. The Xoc Ch’ich’  birding competition begins. Routes open as long as within the state of Yucatan and rules of the event are followed.

Sunday, December 3

9:00 a.m.  Xoc Ch’ich’ ends.

9:30 a.m. Birds lists must be turned in at the Pronatura Península de Yucatán Operation Center in Celestún.

10:00 - 12:00  Closing Brunch and Awards Ceremony at the restaurant La Palapa in Celestún.
 
13:00 Return to Mérida.
Departure for post-festival tours. Contact your travel agency.

There is a Registration Fee to participate in the Fifth Toh Yucatan Bird Festival, this fee is independient of the cost of the optional tours offered by Ecoturismo Yucatán, the prices are as follows:

US dlls per person (For paying in pesos according to the day exchange)

Early Registration (before October 15th )………….US$ 80.00

Regular Registration (October 16th - November 10th)……… US $100.00 

Special Fee: students, local guides and volunteers …… US $ 50.00  

The registration fee includes event’s official t-shirt, diploma, Official Bird List of Yucatan Birds, donation for the Festival supporting guides and priority to the free events which are the Festival’s Opening Ceremony, Conferences and Photographic Exhibit. Additional fees are required for the closing brunch.
